Selena knew that the Empress could never have children again. She also knew that the Empress always longed for the daughter who had died the moment she was born. It was heavy knowledge for a mere twelve-year-old, but Selena was quick on the uptake. The nobles of high society wagged their tongues carelessly, assuming Selena wouldn’t understand a thing. But Selena knew the Empress was a pitiful woman who had lost her daughter, and a fool who, despite the Emperor falling for another woman, didn’t drive her out and treated her well instead.
